Tribal Solid Waste Advisory Network

ABOUT THE TEAM: Tribal Solid Waste Advisory Network (TSWAN) is comprised of 27 federally recognized tribes and native villages throughout Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Alaska. TSWAN provides mutual support and assistance to address solid waste and environmental issues and uphold the desire to protect and enhance natural resources.

ABOUT THE PROJECT: TSWAN is building a pilot program with four rural tribes to set up a hub-and-spoke recycling system that aims to gather enough material to sell to potential end markets. The pilot program will include purchasing equipment, training employees and communities, creating a composting program, conducting end market research and standardizing data collection. The team is seeking support with planning equipment needs, identifying potential material end markets, and examining potential material reuse on tribal lands. This project aims to increase recycling in the four tribal communities by 25% as well as reduce illegal dumping and littering, protect ecosystems, create jobs, and divert materials from landfills.
